i'm not a pixel animator, but i can tell you with blender animation that a basic walk cycle has 7 frames in a loop: 4 unique frames followed by the same actions but mirrored, before starting over on the last one again (in blender we would use 8 frames, with the last one being the same as the first one, but you wouldn't do that for pixel art unless you wanted a slight pause between walks).

walk cycles are actually not as complex as you think, unless you want to add in some swagger, but it involves full-body movement which can be a real pain.
