Our history here has a thousand year jump. "This Roman camp fell out of use in the 300s AD. In 1322 this castle and stone church were built with the ruins". And always the thick layer of black dirt you mention.
My money is on a close pass of Mars in the 13th Century. Renaiscence painters sometimes depict it over to the right in their Passion paintings, like this one bt Campi in the 1500s. Something happenex closely connected to Jesus.
