I think it's nice. It broadens the web of connections and gives Ran a source of personal motivation and independence she was severely lacking. More fuel for fanworks is not a bad thing. As for their relationship I leave it as just that, old friends with some shared past. There's room for them to be much more amicable but I don't see them being buddy buddy, at least mutually.
