The whole idea was laughing at Raiden (who was widely hated at the time) by making him the villain’s butt buddy. It was pretty directly making gays the punchline. I don’t mind of course, but modern remakes shave off all potentially offensive material and make the game more safe and bland. Like the RE4 remake taking away panty shots, “ballistics” and “overtime”.
