It does get demoralizing after a certain point. I considered myself geek gentry at one point and would have to turn people away from games so I didn't end up with 8+ player groups. And now gaming feels like looking for an oasis in the desert.

The girls and the more normal passing geek guys leave to marry and have kids. Other people turn into workaholics as they enter middle age, get promoted, and constantly have to bail. Even the really enthuasiastic nerds with plenty of free time develop health issues or get stuck in a rut where they don't want to try new campaign types or learn new rules anymore.

I had one friend start tire-kicking when I threw a big Halloween get together. He wanted a summary of the plot of a game of Dread I had in mind. And a list of who else was coming to the party. And what horror movie we'd be watching afterwards. And that shit is why I resent GMing sometimes. I'm offering free entertainment, I don't think I should have to cajole players, remind them of schedules, feed them, etc like they're helpless toddlers when they're all 28-33.

tl;dr It's a young person's hobby. And maybe you should just let it go if you're past your mid 20's or missed out on the social flow of going to college, conventions, LARPs, etc when you were younger.
