He got close to her just because she reminded him of his mother and he wanted validation, but by the end he genuinely grow fond of Takopi and Shizuka (while still wanting validation). Anyway, it's pretty shitty how in the final timeline he stopped caring completely after having some random friends, I guess he's at core a pretty individualistic guy, no surprise everyone prefers his older brother.
