I'm now thinking that the reason Teach was able to scar an on alert Shanks was because he knows some of Rocks' "special" swordsmanship. Don't know how he would have learnt it, but then again Big Mom magically knows Hakoku from spending a short while on Elbaf as a 5 year old.
