That's what made DKC work; it was a western british take on the Mario world, part of it anyway. All the elements, characters and settings were done by outsiders of the Japanese circle. Look at Bowser's minions and then look at the Kremlings. Night and day. Even the dynamics of the protagonists are different. Usually it's just Mario and Luigi. In the RPG's, it's just Mario most of the time. Meanwhile in the first game, DK and Diddy had Funky, Candy and Cranky and then in DKC2, Funky, Swanky, Cranky and Wrinkly. By DKC3, you had a whole crew behind the playable Kongs and even more in DK64, there's a whole cast standing by DK. Even if you didn't like him not being playable in DKC/L2/3, the fact that he had so much support stands out from Mario, who only has himself, maybe his brother and Yoshi alongside a group of Toads. That pales in comparison to the Kongs.
