I suppose I thought because the camera is way more advanced than my manual one, that I didn't need to think about it. I just reread the manual and have learned that you can see meter readings in the viewfinder. Maybe it's because it was so sunny but I don't remember seeing it? I've tested it at home and it's there. It's all a learning experience.
