Ok, devil's advocate time. If their profits, in absolute amount terms, are not growing, they are shrinking because of the perpetual loss of purchasing power caused by the perpetual geometric expansion of the supply of legal tender by constant supplementation with mostly fictional yet perfectly spendable legal tender which has the same purchasing power as actually existing legal tender.
So they have to reduce costs if they cannot increase earnings, if they want the profits, in real terms/purchasing power terms, to at least stay constant.
