It didn't feel that way to me? Plenty of mystery oriented media start with rapid fire cryptic "exposition" like this. At least the exposition in this seems like it's lining up important plot points and isn't just stupid bullshit designed to make a tepid plot look deep and complex, like many hollywood movies seem keen on doing nowadays. And since it's from a novel I can actually trust this is going somewhere. Probably.
