4chan was founded as a porn sharing site.
Since 2009, it has been a politics/activism site.
Never, at any point, was its core characteristic "anime". Anime was always contained to /a/ and irrelevant to every other board on the site, whereas things like Chanology, Gamergate, 2016, etc. changed the very makeup of the site. /r9k/ as a board holds more significance to the identity of 4chan than /a/ ever did.
