In mythology, Erinyes were horrifying spirits that punished oath breakers and others who deserved vengeance. They were most often described as being monstrous like the gorgons. Unfortunately, despite being featured prominently in important classical texts like the Aenied, they drifted out of public conciousness.
In D&D, the Erinyes name was originally used just for the Devil counterpart to the Demonic Succubi: Pretty female fiends who tricked players with human guises and punished them for signs of affection. They had no real identity for themselves, and this got worse when they became the name used for female fallen angel warriors, which ironically makes them nearly the opposite of their mythological origin.
Succubi, despite all the recent business with D&D fucking around with their lore and identity, are fairly well set in the public mind as sexy female demons. In fact, I'd argue that it's less that succubi themselves are popular, but that sexy female demons are and succubi is the most common name attached to them.
