The only thing Fujimoto would need to add there is Nayuta being left dying as a result of the mob attack, and Death showing up to finish the job. Which would be perfectly plausible.
There's even the "foreshadowing* of Denji stepping on a crow, which we know by now I be associated with Death after ch 199.
It'd only really be an "ass pull" if we consider everything supernatural that occurs in a series about supernatural Devils, to be an ass pull.
