First of all, we live in a world where being strong isn't necessary for survival. People lift to impress others and gain status, not for some arbitrary feeling of "self-improvement".
But let's say Luthor did just lift because he was seething at Superman. What does that actually have to do with the very valid argument that Superman's strength didn't come along with the virtue of hard work, while Luthor's did? That's the thing you should focus on.
