You've got to make a living somehow, and if the pay is good enough it's easy to justify ignoring your conscience and focusing on self-preservation instead. It might be challenging listening to one of your "clients" you just scouted for an interview screaming his lungs out while he gets melted down into excess fat on your boss's hips just next door, but business is business, and hey, better them than me, right?
I'd like to think that the really stressful part of working under a maneating hedonistic monster is the insatiable drive for growth just like you'd find in any fortune 500 company, just focused on consuming and devouring more and more souls instead of chasing 10% growth next quarter. Two warm bodies a week becomes four, then ten, then before you know it you're dipping into your old contacts to find enough sacrifices to keep you on her good side; an old friend from college, your former roommate, anyone you can lure into her grasp to stave off your own demise for another week and keep her from melting you down like everyone else. And the temptation to fail would always be there, gnawing at you. After all you've seen what happens to those unlucky, poor souls you've lured into her office. The blissful looks on their faces as they're swallowed up into her tail, how after a few seconds of contact they don't even struggle anymore, how they beg her to devour them faster. Watching that over and over again while you struggle more and more each week to meet her ever-increasing quotas has to take it's toll on your mental health, maybe it's time to ask your boss for a vacation. Just as soon as you're finished training the new guy and show him the ropes...
