in LA there are very desperate, out of work ppl who go to TV tapings and get paid just to be warm bodies in seats. they clap, they react, etc. for shitty daytime talk shows. also many get work as background stand-ins, etc.
our physical world is very similar to a simulation or movie set. NPCs get paid as well as ones who just show up because they wanna feel something from the protest. doing nuffin does get boring.
