So true. Growing up white, for the most part, is a HUGE disadvantage when it comes to understanding tribal people and most non-whites. Mainly because even in relatively abusive or dysfunctional white households there's a LOT more humanity than in 'healthy' tribal one. We think 'Oh, I know how far down the rabbit hole goes with humanity. I can probably imagine it."

But that's not true and it's dangerous not to realize how ignorant we are. At extremes, it's why you have young white chicks backpacking through India only to get raped, dismembered and hung from trees- all with a surprised, confused look on their face for all perpetuity.
