Yes, in a nutshell that's how it's done. Make an impression on him so he remembers you. Wear something like a racing green polo shirt that basically no one else would be wearing and he'll visually remember you to start. Have an anecdote and relate the job to something in your personal life so he thinks you're invested in it more than just a paycheque - i.e. my dad was a plumber, I always helped my mom fix stuff around the house and thought this would be a cool career, etc.
When you call him up he will likely remember you because most people are too lazy to call him up months later. He'll think you're demonstrating ambition and potential and may give you a chance. If not, he may shortlist you because he knows how hard it is to find good, reliable workers.
