That's a European thing because European nation-states entangled themselves with the entire world so you never really fight against one nation, you'd be fighting their colonies and alliances as well. Even during WW2, Germany fostered relations with Japan AND China since Germany wanted to also mediate their conflict with one another to stop the Soviet Union's influence from festering further into Asia.
