It's laziness on the part of the developers in part, but they're also being forced to keep to deadlines that make optimization difficult. Why spend time on that, when you could be already selling it, after all? Also, the amount of stuff being put into games these days make it more complicated to optimize in general, I'd wager.

As for why I beg, I grew up with pretty much nothing in the technology department. It was oh-so very desirable, hearing the other kids talk about games they played. That never left me.

Doesn't really qualify as a franchise, but Freelancer. That one was great and really needs a graphics update. And a story continuation, for that matter.
