To my understanding, Yorha discontinued the use of dedicated gunner classes, and merged their role in with the B type of android, (A for attacker, G for gunner, got merged in to B for battle.)
I believe the biggest reason was that machine life forms were adopting bullet resistant armour en masse, rendering androids who can only use guns somewhat redundant.
With pods able to provide ranged fire support, and B types able to provide powerful melee, they're more versatile then dedicated attacker or gunner types.
