You say that as if Mai isn't a one dimensional kunoichi. I'm not saying Hinako isn't one dimensional, because she is. SNK didn't know what the fuck to do with her in 2000, and 20 years later, they still dont know tf to do with her, but pretending Mai is any better is hilarious.
The breakout character of 2000 was Kula and the devs were fully aware. She was featured in lots of art pieces, the game cover, the opening, she was a mini-boss and she had her own stage and theme. Hinako was prob some old coot's waifu, and she still may be considering she is even obscure in Japan.
