Sad part is, Elio got completely rewritten to get back to the "universal themes" angle and away from the "director's autobiography" one. It didn't work because 1.) too late into production for it to really work and 2.) I don't think Pixar truly knows how to do universal themes anymore, the DEI hires are all too self-absorbed to understand how to make movies that appeal to people besides them.
