>2 SUCCESS: Trusted sources. Hail’s logic as to why the intel should is solid seems sound enough, but most of the information that has been verified concerns the details rather than critical pieces. You still don’t know who this mysterious original source is, but you’ve have been given a big clue.
>77 DOUBLE FAIL: Flawed intel. Regardless of other results, one important piece of Hail’s information turns out to be entirely inaccurate.
>SELECTED: Everyone knows that Abominable Intelligence is most ardently hated by the Holy Chorkrum Empire, it's the one thing sure to guarantee their sudden involvement. They have a track record of targeting very specific military objectives, Hail has a theory. [AI Holy War]
“You’ve got to give me something, Hail.” Rubbing your fingers against your forehead doesn’t do much to keep the exasperation out of your voice. “If you can’t tell me about this intel, you’ve at least got to tell me -why- you’re willing to trust it enough to plan on.”
Hail takes a long pause before answering.
“My daughters would be about her age now.”
“Whose?”
“Terri. The young un’ from your squad with a chip on her shoulder.”
“I think I know who Terri is, thank you Hail. Stop trying to change the subject.”
“I’m not.” Hail answers quickly. “Believe me, I’m not. I just want you to understand this, it’s important. I can’t even look at girls like Terri without seeing my own Amber and Olivia, without being reminded what the slavers and their profiteering Empire took from me.”
You nod to show that you’re listening, but you’re careful not to interrupt. Soldiers talk, but you and Hail hadn’t exactly been keen to share backstories. It had taken months of gruelling jungle warfare training and huddling in the darkness, dodging Legion and Cradler patrols, before Hail ever mentioned his family. You know they were killed in a raid on the Earth colony of Hightower but this is the first time he’s named his daughters before.
