Had they been in NATO they'd keep the Putinigger out. Ukraine is at fault for thinking after Soviet fell they could be friends with Russia and get economic development from EU at the same time. With developments Putin moved faster. Really sucks for all involved but hey, at least Russia is getting punished for it.
