It didn't fail, it was a deliberare stylistic choice. The first one is clearly referencing classic zombie movies with a night time atmosphere, and the second one is referencing classic zombie movies with a horror in daylight theme.
I'll give you that two of the characters in Left 4 Dead 2 aren't classic zombie movie archetypes though (Nick inspired by Miami Spy shows like Burn Notice, Coach inspired by lovable black family men from shows like Fresh Prince and Family Matters). Roachelle's design concept is actual peak Zombie Movie archetype being a direct reference to Rec as an eager female reporter. Extreme shame that they completely dropped the ball with writing her dialogue to make her just an annoying sassy black woman rather than an overly ambitious journalist. I don't know a single person that found Rochelle likable, she was always the last picked character when you played with people online.
