"Truth, Justice, and The American Way" was something that came out of the Fliescher cartoons, which Siegel and Shuster didn't have anything to do with; the comics and the radio show tended to lean on the idea that Clark helps "the weak and oppressed". If truth and justice are brought up, the last word is usually freedom.
Google is fucking free, by the way, and you can just read Action Comics #1. The car-smashing is in the story, it was the getaway vehicle of a bunch of guys who captured Lois, and he breaks the car to stop them getting away. It's on the cover because it's exciting and interesting (there are rumors that the National Comics heads didn't want to run that image, at first, because "nobody would believe a man could lift a car over his head").
And the reason he "only" had super-strength was because the still wanted Superman to seem "plausible", which was mostly because if shitty editorial practice in sci-fi in the 30's. Krypton originally had greater gravity that Earth, and all of Clark's powers came from yhe same principle as weighted clothing in anime. I don't think the yellow sun thing gained traction until the Silver Age.
