There are a lot of different cases with GATE. Different states, different school districts, different times, different people. But if you were accepted into GATE, you would have had an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) written for you that the school itself kept track of, which would have caused you to be called up at the end of high school as you had mentioned. That or the fact that you were flagged nationally by the psychologist who administered the test.
