Not to defend Hoyoshit but two gender protags can work well when they're written differently (using a pic from CCC because base Extra they're written the exact same) and the interactions with the cast change as a result, double based if you can still get yuri ends out of it.
I am mostly defending this because one of my favorite stories uses that setup though.
