My only assumption is that he's flying either to like, another airport in Japan (I had to do this when going to Nagoya years back, where I landed in HND and then had to transfer to go to NGO) before the actual flight to America. Because no, there's no such thing as a plane that doesn't have an entertainment system if the flight s longer than like 4 hours otherwise.
