It's mostly just ego and only listening to people with authority/money they personally know instead of doing self education or research. You get the same thing with people who only watch streamers and take everything at face value. I have this now former friend who worships asmondgold who showed me that dire wolf scam. Right off the bat I sensed the herald of Nurgle was pushing something stupid and looked at his sources. Turns out the "paper" was riddled with errors, mainly them stating the dire wolves were closely related to grey wolves. a few years back I read a paper on the sequencing of 2 different dire wolve's DNA and they found they were a out group of carnivorids and are more closely related to false wolves such as maned wolves. I told him to look up shit like trangenetics (aka gene splicing and genetic engineering) and he lost his shit. I then spent a few hours researching and tearing his and his idol apart in a call with a bunch of other friends. Same dude flunked out of college because he wanted to make video games but couldn't do basic algebra and then tried studying to become FBI but quite after I told him the physical requirements. He's never ran more tha a mile in his life and is morbidly obese.
