Aw shit, I think you are right. Will just have to hope a chemical flush works, and then pray the previous owner didnt do anything stupid like filling the tranny with stop leak as well. The oil seems totally clean so I think that means the stop leak is limited to the coolant system, right?

thanks for the tip about removing the thermo, I hadnt thought to do that (I was just going to fill it with water, rev it until the thermo opens, then drain)
