Seems to me like anime influenced acting style over time. Old samurai movies are very intense and understated while modern examples like this are copying kawaii mannerisms. Acting tends to depend on going over the top like in theater. But here, it seems to copy inhuman and uncanny behaviors only possible in cartoons
