The base level of attractiveness was always there, and almost no female character was made to be deliberately unattractive, unless its was a gag or you really were meant to think of her as ugly.
Nowadays, at worst ugly, at best plain characters are presented to you, and you are told to think that they are beautiful, because words no longer mean what they actually mean.
