Seven men given harsh 15-year sentences for anti-Israel riot at Russian airport
1/2
A Russian court has handed down some of the most severe sentences to date over the anti-Israel riot that saw a mob storm an airport in the Dagestan region, sentencing seven men to prison terms of 14 to 15 years.
The Stavropol regional court on Wednesday found the men guilty on a range of serious charges, including participation in mass riots, violating transport security, and encroachment on the life of a law enforcement officer. The defendants—Mikail Razakov, Dzhamal Ibavov, Bashir Magomedov, Ilyas Nasuev, Kamil Ibragimkhalilov, Ruslan Murtazaliev and Arslan Magomedov—will serve the first three years in a high-security prison before being transferred to a strict-regime colony.
The verdicts are the latest in a series of trials held outside Dagestan following the violent events of 29 October 2023. On that evening, hundreds of men stormed the Uytash airport in Makhachkala after a flight arrived from Tel Aviv. The mob, chanting antisemitic slogans, broke through barriers on to the tarmac in search of Israeli citizens, protesting against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The riot caused more than 24m roubles (£215,000) in damages, and 23 police officers were injured.
The trials have been moved to courts in the neighbouring Stavropol and Krasnodar regions, a common practice in Russia for high-profile or sensitive cases. To date, at least 130 people have been convicted in connection with the riot, with the vast majority receiving custodial sentences. Russia's Investigative Committee has identified 142 individuals as being involved, with seven still at large.
