Both, the masculine and the feminine principle, are created as the basic structure of life on Earth. They manifest as male or female beings, but behind that, on a more fundamental level, it's principles that are beyond the biology, the material plane. So they can be called "divine", not in a sense of "mother god" and "father god" but as archetypes that are there to serve as the foundation of the biology and psychology of the sexes.
