I think the best hybridization would occur when you completely commit to it and merge two specific bloodlines, rather than continuously adding mystery meat with every generation. The benefit is that you can return to recessive alleles, as you begin to select the right genetic combinations. You'll also have to throw out a lot of bad matches though.

This natural sort of mixing occurs due to proximity of two populations. The type of mixing we see in modern day is largely not like this, however.
