A spokeswoman for the local police said that "we are conducting a situation assessment, we can confirm that there is an active shooter". She refused to give further details.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said in a statement that he was in contact with security forces called to the scene. CNN reported that FBI personnel were also rushed to the base.
Fort Stewart Air Base is used to train regular and reserve units in preparation for sending them on operations, and is home to the U.S. Army's Third Division. The base is located about 380 km southeast of Atlanta. The base is home to more than 10,000 people – soldiers, their families and civilian employees of the army.
