Real life example, my girlfriend in Taiwan. Her paternal and maternal family includes Han, Hokla, Aboriginal, and Japanese. Half of the descendants were Taiwan born and had been in Taiwan since the Qing dynasty. Some grew up as Japanese citizens speaking Japanese. There were also Han and Hokkien that arrived when the ROC retreated there. For her family members that were born under the Qing Dynasty, raised as Japanese, and then were occupied by the ROC fleeing the PRC, do you think they feel the same as a mainland Chinese?
