I've been watching Star Trek SG1 for the first time since I was a kid. I just got to this episode you might like if you haven't seen it. In SG1, the greys are known as Asgardians. Humans become friends with them at some point. In a later episode, the humans help rescue one of them and also vital research. The research end up being onpe of the Asgardian ancestors remaining perfectly intact. But he looks more humanoid than the modern Asgardians. They admit they have been cloning themselves for over a thousand years, but have not had enough genetic diversity. Basically they look like little grey guys because they cloned themselves too much and now have to research their ancestor to introduce genetic diversity to keep living. Pic rel.
