For me, it was losing everything when my divorce finalized in 2017 and then getting fired in 2022 for not taking the jab. Haven't been able to get a job since. The period of employment between the divorce settlement and getting fired was about four and half years, which wasn't enough time to build up a huge savings after starting over.
My parents are elderly and were over the moon when I moved back home. We get along fine and while I have personal ambition, the divorce and current state of dating has removed family formation as a motivator. They'd be happy for me to stay here until they pass away. It does make me feel like a loser at times but I also see it as an opportunity to pivot to a different career now that programming is mostly dead, at least for white men.
The main thing has been to become a full participant in the household. Mom doesn't make my meals for me. I'm on SNAP so we actually can't share food legally, but even if I could, I wouldn't want her burdened with making me meals and cleaning up. And I take care of most things that are physical, which is good when it comes to yard work and snow blowing/shoveling. Lots of old men die suddenly doing that stuff. Don't want my dad to go out that way.
