No that different than Yugoslavia, just with higher standard of living. Certainly, live on GDR was not like paradise -- that would have taken many more decades. In comparison to contemporary Germany, GDR had reached a higher stage of civilization already: no homeless, no drug addicts, right to work, universal access to healthcare and education, high-trust society nearly without crime (well, except theft of "peoples property").
