What you actually use is a reliable 10mm autoloader or a large caliber revolver if you have to use a handgun at all. If you have the option, a rifle in at least an intermediate caliber cartridge (5.56x45, 7.62x39) is much preferred, but your first choice is "biggest bullet possible from as far away as possible". If you ever look at a bear's skull, that thing is sloped like tank armor, bears are a mass of muscle and claws and they can and will kill you in the most horrifying way you can imagine, and it's slow and painful because they eat you while you're alive rather than killing you quick like a big cat will.
