The .wad sounds kinda ass, anon, but I think Doom remained alive because it's old and easy to draw in.
There are a lot of gameplay mods, sure, but then as now 99% of custom levels don't touch stock Doom logic, or they use it but slightly modified. Multiplayer aside, almost no mapper maps for a mod unless the map comes WITH the mod.
You should try Godless Night and Paradise if you haven't already.
