Town Hall Pie Massacre, in
>/FSBC/

This was (surprisingly?) wholesome SoL after some of the things in week 1. It's also a "Pie clones are sentient ponies" story, sure, but the vast majority of this week was just a comfy ride through the best moments of Rose's life. The 'mystery' helps in framing those memories as a part of the greater story, though, and following what not!Pinkie does added... if not a sense of urgency, then at least something to keep the fic from getting dull. To the fic's credit, it also plays a bit with the accident—the red herrings aren't bad, and they make sense, rather than being there just to subvert expectations. The part I didn't like is that Mirror (and by extension the fic) sort of lies to you in that first graveyard scene—I didn't find the explanation for why it's done this way satisfactory, and it kept feeling a little cheap.

Other than that, though? We leave the turbulent memories of week 1 and swim in cute family SoL all week. It's kind of a family speedrun, but that's fair enough. I liked how the characters got developed. You could say that they're a bit by-the-books, but "tropes" are only bad if they're done mindlessly, and here the overprotective in-law who's actually nice was a highlight of the fic for me. The fic is very, I don't know, grounded? Something like that. They're all living very mundane lives, but the very heartwarming way the fic talks about their daily happiness and lesser struggles is pleasant.

I guess it's just pretty hard to talk too long about this fic on the spot. It was written appropriately, which makes the Chapter 3 sex festival from last week even stranger. I can try to guess why the author did it (to portray their very physical fascination with each other at that stage of their relationship?), but it's really different from how the rest of the story reads, in a bad way. The last two bits of the not!Pinkie drama were starting to get a little repetitive, but at least that's super short, and to be fair I did even tear up a little at the epilogues—but it was on balance a happy feeling. I wish there was something they could've done to help Mirror, but this is not that kind of a fic. Is Rose dumb (and, ironically, selfish) for not trying to wake up immediately? Maybe. Or maybe what she felt about needing to recover all the memories was true. Oh, and like the kids would say is, F's in the chat for the Ponkfags, getting randomly CHEESED for over a decade.
And on a random note: getting named "Cold Heart" because your parents named your older sister "Warm Heart" is Spoiled Rich-levels of awful. Not that Spoiled exists here—it's nice to read fics predating her name. Oh, right, the OCs and their names were good here! Was "Dolphin Dreams" a name for Sissy?
Overall, a nice, emotional story. Not "exceptional", but that's precisely what's so good about it.

I read the fic yesterday and still ended up late, crap. I'll do even better next time!
