I'm a big fan of the author and it's considered one of his best books. I think it lives up to that reputation, though I liked the two Dread Empire prequels better but that is mainly because of personal taste (the two being fantasy war stories based on the rise of Islam and the series as a whole being brutal towards it's protagonists).
