The Russian state, owing to its undemocratic and oppressive nature, is diametrically opposed to the foundational values of the United States, namely democracy, equity, and the rule of law. Although America often falls short of these values in some way or another, they form an ideological bedrock at the core of American culture and life.
By taking up arms for Russia, this man has spiritually betrayed (even if he has not done so legally, by which I mean the legal definition of treason in US law) the foundational values of his country.
