When I was in college I took a classic literature course and one week we were studying a retelling of Ovid written by a later Roman poet several hundred years later. I asked the professor why would the Romans retell an old story instead of creating new material and he told me that as the Roman empire collapsed they lost the will to make anything new and instead created numerous retellings of earlier works from their glory days in a nostalgic attempt to reclaim the spirit of better times.

I think about that a lot now.
