Latvian security service detains former lawmaker over pro-Russian statements

Latvia's State Security Service has detained Aleksejs Roslikovs, a former member of parliament, according to a report from the public broadcaster LSM. The head of Roslikovs' "Stability!" political party, Svetlana Čulkova, confirmed the detention.
The arrest follows an ongoing investigation into Roslikovs for allegedly inciting ethnic hatred and assisting a foreign aggressor state in activities targeting Latvia.
The investigation was prompted by a contentious speech Roslikovs delivered in the Saeima, Latvia's parliament, during a debate on a proposal aimed at "eliminating the consequences of Russification." Roslikovs argued against the measure, asserting that Russian-speaking Latvians had historically stood with ethnic Latvians in national struggles.
After delivering his remarks in Latvian, Roslikovs switched to Russian to declare, "There are more of us, and Russian is our language," before making an obscene gesture toward his fellow lawmakers.
